Can You Play Cello in VR? Cello on Meta Quest
Yes. Cello is a cello for Meta Quest 2, 3, 3S and Pro. Sit down and put the headset on, and the cello stands in front of you in your own room, its neck beside your left shoulder. Draw the bow across the strings and it plays.
A cello is hard to start. A real one costs money, it takes up a corner of the room, and everyone in the house hears every scrape. Cello plays through the headset. Put headphones on and the scrapes are yours alone.
How do you play cello in VR?
You can play with your bare hands or with Touch controllers, and each hand has one job. The first time you play, a How to Play card shows you each one and ticks it off as you do it.
Your right hand bows.
- Draw the bow across the strings to play. Bow faster to play louder.
- Tilt the bow to move from string to string, as on a real cello.
Changing direction doesn’t restart the note, so you can bow back and forth on one long note. With a controller, the bow hand rumbles gently while a note sounds, and it ticks when you cross to another string.
Your left hand stops the strings.
- With bare hands, put a finger on a string to stop it, and lift your fingers to play it open. With more than one finger down, the one nearest the bridge sounds.
- With a controller, hold the trigger and slide your hand along the neck to stop the string. Let go of the trigger and the string plays open.
A dot on the string shows where your finger is.
The music stand
Turn the music stand on in the menu, and it stands ahead of you and to your right, where a cellist’s would. It has 49 pieces, including Bach’s cello suites, Saint-Saëns’s The Swan, the cello’s part in Canon in D, and Ode to Joy.
Pick a song and press Play. The stand follows you and turns its own pages.
- Guidance is on to start. A ring on the fingerboard shows where to stop the note, with its name beside it, and the stretch of string to bow is lit. A fainter ring marks the note after it. The marks turn green when bowing now would play the note.
- Listen plays the song for you and marks each note as it goes.
Turn Guidance off and the marks go, leaving you the sheet music.
Pitch assist, or not
Pitch assist is on to start. Every note snaps to the nearest one in the scale, so what you play is in tune. In the menu you can pick the scale: chromatic, or a major scale in the key you choose. While a song is open, it snaps to the song’s own notes.
Turn pitch assist off and the note slides with your hand, the way it does on a real fingerboard. Finding the note is up to your ear.
The strings
A cello has four strings, tuned a fifth apart and an octave below a viola’s.
| Instrument | Lowest | Highest | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cello | C2 | G2 | D3 | A3 |
Each string goes up an octave and a fifth from its open note, so the highest note is E5.
The menu
With bare hands, turn your left palm toward you and pinch your thumb and first finger to open the menu, then point with your right hand and pinch to press. With controllers, the left menu button opens it and the right trigger presses. It has:
- How to Play
- pitch assist and the scale
- the music stand
- Bring the Cello to Me, which puts the cello back in front of you
- the note display
- passthrough
What Cello isn’t
Better you hear it here than after you buy it.
- The strings don’t push back. A real bow rests on the string. In VR there’s nothing to press against, so the bow is drawn resting on the string, and with controllers the haptics stand in for the feel. It won’t teach you a bow hold.
- It stops at E5. A real cello goes higher. Here each string goes up an octave and a fifth.
- The music is all in bass clef. Cello music moves to tenor and treble clef for high passages. On the stand, those notes go on ledger lines above the bass clef.
- It’s right-handed. There’s no left-handed mode.
- It’s single-player. There’s no multiplayer.
